In mid-October Japan opened up to foreign visitors, and in mid-November we flew from Boston to Tokyo to start our tour. Staying basically in the middle of Japan we visited Tokyo, the Fuji lakes region, Kyoto, Nara and the Sonii Highlands. As we moved around we encountered varying amounts of fall color; primarily reds from the maples were the only leaves still on trees. This tease suggests the need to return a bit earlier, or maybe in the spring.
We slept on tatami mats and enjoyed a traditional Japanese multi-course dinner, hustled through stations and glided along on a bullet train. The people seem to always defer to one another, are polite and quiet. I only recall hearing one honking car horn.
