American Southwest: Shiprock and the Bisti Wilderness

The last locations for the trip were in New Mexico at Shiprock and the Bisti Wilderness. The Navajo Nation governs Shiprock, a formation that plays a significant role in Navajo religion, mythology and tradition. The Bisti/De-Na-Zin Wilderness with its rolling landscape of badlands offers some of the most unusual scenery found in the Four Corners Region. We spent 11 hours in the sage desert and only encountered about a dozen people, a welcome relief from the hordes of tourists at other sites.
